Evaluating Your Own Performance

The objectives of performance evaluation may be to ensure that the company is getting adequate returns on what it is spending on the employees and also to relate it to rewards and promotions. Well managed companies look at it as a tool to understand its employees’ issues and for the employees’ to realize the company’s objectives. They also use it to promote employees’ career and growth.

However, conscientious employees with an eye on their own career enhancement do not wait for others to evaluate them. They constantly evaluate themselves and try to improve their performance to achieve their career objectives. It gives them self confidence and happiness as they are in full control.

How does one go about evaluating ones own performance? Performance is always evaluated against a set of goals that one sets out to achieve. Your personal goal may be to become top of the class marketing executive in your area of operation. To achieve this goal, you will need to know specifically what your key result areas are and how you can measure them. You would also like to know where you have reached, how much more you have yet to go and in which direction. You need to have your job description clearly written down so that you know your focus areas of work and do not drift from day to day, doing tasks with no relation to your goals.

The key result areas will have key result indicators which may be tangible or intangible. Tangible indicators are normally figures like sales target, profit target, which can be easily measured. Then there are intangible ones like building customer relations, increasing goodwill which are often affairs of the heart; they are very important and affect the tangible results but very difficult to measure objectively. Nevertheless, an attempt may be made to measure them on a scale of 1 to 5 or 1 to10 basing it on the opinions of people who can make an independent and unbiased judgment for you.

The results then should be compared with benchmarks to know how you performing in relation to your colleagues or competitors and more importantly to know if you are making real progress from month to month or just drifting.

It may also be a good idea to do a SWOT analysis of yourself, listing your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to your career goals. This requires an honest self assessment and also taking candid opinion of others whom you consider to be your well wishers.

The above measures may go a long way in helping you achieve your goals in life. Sometimes working with a life coach or a business coach can guide you in the right direction and give you the momentum to get your life moving on the path to success.
